Leandro was given two life sentences for stealing nine children’s videotapes, which included “Snow White,” “Cinderella” and “Free Willie 2.” Leandro would be 87 years old before he would be eligible for parole, all due to the theft of $153.54 worth of movies. Petty theft carries a maximum sentence of three years, Leandro received two life sentences. What were the first two strikes you ask? Two home burglaries committed in 1983, during which there occurred no violence and Leandro didn’t carry a weapon during either. The theft of the video tapes, also with no violence and no weapon involved, counted as Leandro’s third and fourth strike; the petty theft charges were misdemeanors considered wobblers, leaving it up to the judge’s discretion.
